The palais galliera in paris has decided to organise the first retrospective about martin margiela, the contemporary belgian designer who marked and influenced a generation. a beautiful way to immerse yourself into the world of this very discreet designer, who never shows himself, but who actively participated in the creation of this exhibition which begins with the launch of his own house in 1989.walking through the world of margiela is trying to understand the reflection, through the stages, but also the questions of a designer who has never stopped reinventing himself. margiela / galliera 1989 - 2009 - 3rd march to 15th july 2018 – at the palais galliera, fashion museum in paris.interview of alexandre samson:martin margiela, from his first collection and during 20 years, questions and turns the fashion system upside-down. he will go against all these contemporaries. he will question fashion from its conception to its consumption, even passing by its presentation. conception, because he will be drawn towards themes that others didn’t necessarily use, meaning that he’ll use the non-finished, holes, destroyed things, as a signature. he’ll show all the structure and all the steps of making a garment. he’ll turn the garment around, he’ll play around with trompe-oeil, he’ll use previously unseen shapes, always surprising his clients and the women who wear his clothes and this he’ll also make something new within the history of fashion by using use old clothes, that he’ll reuse, re-cut and re-make to be worn as new clothes. today it’s called the ‘artsianal’ line.martin margiela, at the start of our encounter, did what no other fashion designer had done, in that he took his time, to explain all of his collections to us, all of his inspirations, all his silhouettes, all his shows, one after the other. by taking note of all of this precious information, we find out that there was a true human story behind it all, there was a designer who launched his house, with his doubts, his certainties, the encounters he had, the women who helped him, and so it was truly a human journey that we wanted to show through this chronological exhibition. music bandit & nikit - 2018
